With Summer finally hitting New York, we are all dreading the 95 degree temperatures and flocking out east to the ever ends of Long Island where life is less about constant movement and more about how much rose you can consume in one sitting. The Hamptons can be a very interesting place in the summer, with all sorts of people, from editor and chiefs to summer interns looking for their next step into the world. They will all be there, and let me tell you, they will be dressed nice. Here is my very own personal style guide to make your summer time in The Hamptons a little easier.
The Hamptons can be tricky when it comes to packing, whether it be a weekend getaway, or a month long vacation. One thing I always remember, after sunscreen of course, is to bring variety because the weather in The Hamptons is somewhat like watching a Nicholas Sparks movie, sometimes it’s great, and other times well, you know. if you are coming from Manhattan like most of us, always remember it is going to be about ten degrees cooler out there, don’t be that person stuck out at night complaining they are cold when all you packed was t-shirts. Let’s all be prepared together.
I am going to start with this mainly because, what fashion person wouldn’t chose their shoes over most of their important belongings. In The Hamptons you want to look nice, but you don’t want to look very try hard or flashy. You want a solid pair of shoes that look nice with multiple items, whether it be day or night. I usually take a couple pair, just because I am a variety freak, but make sure they are all comfortable, you are on vacation anyway. Don’t think you need some fancy shoes to fit in either, solid color slip ons or vans with a good outfit will look better than the overly try hard in the Giuseppe’s. If you are looking for shoes in The Hamptons, I will recommend going to Scoop and grabbing some Del Toro’s. They are by far the most comfortable shoes I own, and Scoop usually has a sale on them. So just remember, variety, comfort and versatile.
Bring On The Collars
I have found collared shirts to be so useful in The Hamptons. Whether a classic button down or a polo, they make any outfit a bit more sophisticated and to be honest, I think they make people look much nicer. I always pack multiple collared shirts for time out in the town, lunches, dinner, etc. They also, to me atlas, give a more summer time feeling. It reminds me of spending Summer at a friend’s country club when I kid. Pack at least one and let me know if you are not happy you did by the time you get back.
Along with the polos and buttons, you will want multiple, I repeat, MULTIPLE t-shirts for everyday. They are perfect for lying on the beach or by the pool. A nice t-shirt is always good to have for when the days are hot and the sun is beating. T-shirts are an item I will spend money on for good quality and especially uniqueness. let’s face it, no one wants a t-shirt that doesn’t fit good. I have found nice t-shirts to keep shape for much longer than any fast fashion retailer. I love to look for unique seams, graphics and prints, I will spend a lot of money on a good print. Anyway, pack multiple and you will be happy in the long run. Worst that could happen, you have too many choices, which I won’t even get into because absolutely no one has time to hear me rant about that.
It Gets Chilly
Honestly, I am not even going to get into this one. Just pack a sweater or two, you will be happy you did, as will everyone else when they don’t have to hear anyone complain when you are outside at The Surf Lodge.
Yes, These Too
Pants are something you will want to take. Sometimes you won’t wear them, but they are nice to have if you are going to dinner, parties or a night out at bars and clubs. A nice Khaki chino pant is always nice to have. The ones I bought are made out of tropical suiting, which saves my life when wearing them during the day. I always take a nice pair of black pants, because you never know when you will want them, black pants are saviors and we all know it. Knit or jogger pants are always good to have for lounging at night or if you want to catch a relaxing film at East Hampton Cinema. If you are like me, you will try to find every excuse to wear these pants to every occasion, but you have to know, you can’t do that. So everyone bring your pants, and just maybe you’ll get to take them off.
Bring The Bling
If you are into fashion, you probably know what a simple watch, ring or bracelet can do for an outfit. They give you that extra step in your walk without even having to make the movement. Sunglasses as well, you don’t even need to wear them, just having them clipped on your shirt will give you that extra something. Although wearing them IN THE SUN does make your look much more luxurious. Wearing them inside, just no. Beyonce doesn’t walk around with them on inside, there for you have no right to wear them when indoors, so take them off. If need help finding what glasses shape is best your face, Sunglass Hut has created a very cool and pretty acurate way for finding which style is best for you. Sunglass Hut Virtual Fitting Room
I am going to start this part off by saying that this is my personal style guide. I am a SoulCycle fiend and it is a huge trend out there right now, especially with the new Montauk studio open. As many know, it has quite a cult following and we love to represent them. You will most definitely see SoulCycle apparel while you are out there. It is an addiction that I can be proud to say I have. I will always represent my Union Square Studio Family no matter what. Come join us, take control and find your soul.
This one is a given, you will obviously feel the need to pack every pair of shorts you have for your three day weekend getaway, and we all know that we will only where two of them the whole time. I like to have my options of what I may want to wear. Therefore, I will continue to stuff my bag full with 10 pairs of shorts. Just to know if I wanted, I could change into a new pair every hour and give them all some love. I usually bring pretty classic style shorts, button closures for the day, hook and eye closures for the evening, and drawstrings just because they are so damn comfortable. I think having fun with prints on shorts and pants is great, just be aware of the clashing prints on prints, it can be done, but please don’t overdue it.
Last And Most Important
Bring a few swimsuits. I love Onia’s 5″ swim trunks, they are amazing and I often times wear them out as shorts. Worth every single penny. You can buy these out in The Hamptons at Scoop as well. If you need a cheaper but nice pair of swim trunks, go to any Marc By Marc Jacobs boutique and ask if they have special item swim trunks. They most likely will, and they will cost probably no more than $40.
So remember, pack enough to be comfortable in any situation and you will have a great stay in The Hamptons. I am often out there, if you see me, please say hi, I would love to meet you all!
