I recently headed out to Mexico for the first time ever with Thompson Hotels to say at a new gem of theirs in the beautiful Playa Del Carmen. I’m not going to lie, I was a bit nervous at first being that it was my first touch down in Mexico, but I knew the trip was going to be great and that Montezuma’s Revenge would not be a souvenir returning with me.
Playa Del Carmen is a very interesting place to visit, because aside form the tourists and other visitors, you can really feel the Mexican culture that is still there. Aside from other tourist cities in Mexico, Playa Del Carmen has no high rise resorts, or high rise anything for that matter. All the properties have encompassed the culture and built around it to keep the tourist feel somewhat irrelevant. The vibe is very simple and laid back, but definitely still has fun and outgoing aspects like attractions, excursions, and nightlife. You can travel to Playa Del Carmen by either flying into Cancun, waiting 3 hours for customs, and then take a $20 USD shuttle about an hour to Playa, OR you can fly into the beautiful island of Cozumel, wait 10 minutes in customs, take a $5 USD shuttle to a 35 minute ferry that drops you in the center of Playa Del Carmen.
Thompson Hotels struck gold with the decision to open this incredible property in Playa before other major luxury brands. The main property sits one block back from the beach above a shopping center, which includes a starbucks, H&M, Calvin Klein, multiple restaurants, and other small boutiques. The main property has two stories of rooms, ranging form standards to beautiful suites, all with beach side views and balconies. On top is the rooftop to set the bar of all rooftops, with an infinite pool stretching the entire length of the hotel accommodating guests with pool beds, water chairs, a the tallest views in Playa. The rooftop sports two restaurants, Catch and Cinco. Cinco will serve you in the morning and through out the day with amazing daytime foods, my personal favorite was the ceviche and oysters. Catch, the famous NYC hotspot, is the only Catch in all of Mexico, which is going to play a very big role for dining in Playa Del Carmen. It is a must for dinner, offering sunset views of the ocean, and some of the best food I have ever had. The rooftop is lined with cozy chairs and day beds as well as beautiful bungalow canopies that area available upon request.
A few blocks down from the main property sits The Thompson Beach House. Linked with Thompson Playa Del Carmen, this three story property sits beach front, and is a more relaxing and quieter option as to the main property. The vibe is very modern and relaxing with a single pool on a beautiful pool deck that offers three tiers of tanning day beds all sitting on sand to really give you the beach feel. So whether you are in for some rooftop pool fun, or you want a relaxing getaway on the beach front, Thompson Hotels has it all to offer at their new Playa Del Carmen property. Relive the trip with me below… I’m still reminiscing. 🙂
